August 2010 Control Freaks Tour: Stampin' Up! Holiday Mini Catalog

Blog Tour Pic

Welcome to the August 2010 Tour de Freaks Blog Hop! We are so excited to have you join us today,  This month, I'm the 6th stop on the tour featuring projects made with products from Stampin' Up!'s upcoming Holiday Mini Catalog (available 9/1/10).   Our tour is nice and short and features some of your favorite Control Freaks Stampers. You may have just come from my good friend Gretchen Barron - welcome!

One of my favorite Holiday Mini Catalog products is a new Embossing Folder called Northern Flurry.  So I knew I had to use it on both of today's projects.

First up is a fun holiday card using the new stamp set Jolly Old Saint Nick.  I totally fell in love with the Santa image.  It doesn't require much coloring, so it really could be a fast and easy card to duplicate if you need to mass produce your handmade cards for the upcoming holidays.

Jolly-Old-Saint-Nick

And look what else I used...Basic Glimmer Brads and Silver Tinsel Trim "ribbon".  Oh my gosh - I have totally fallin' in love with both of these products.  I wasn't sure about the Tinsel Trim.  But it's SO cool...you are just gonna have to have it.  It looks and feels just like tinsel.  It comes on a spool and is actual a very thin wire with tinsel on it.  So it's pliable and easy to work with.

Here's a closer look:

Glimmer-Brad-&-Tinsel-Trim-

Ain't it cute?!

Next up is an adorable new candy packaging made with Stampin' Up! new Candy Wrapper Bigz L Die.

Triple-Candy-Wrapper

OK - so these little Candy Wrapper Boxes are a little tricky at first.  But just like the Mini Milk Carton die...once you do a couple, you'll get them down pat.  I die cut them first, then ran them through the Big Shot Machine with the Northern Flurry Embossing Folder

Triple-Candy-Wrapper-cu
I sponged Whisper White Craft ink over the raised snowflakes (with a sponge dauber).  I really liked the way it brought out the details in the snowflakes.  I did the same thing on the card above as well.

The greeting is from a new stamp set called Tags Till Christmas (available 9/1/10) and is matted with Scallop Square Punch.

See the Tinsel Trim again...LOVE IT!!

Dawns Stamping Supplies

Well, that's it for me.  I hope you enjoyed this stop on the Controlfreaks Tour.  Now it's on to the next stop...the infamous Patty Bennett!

Dawn's Birthday Celebration Drawings!

Thank you to everyone who left a comment during my Birthday Celebration.  It was a fun birthday this year with some wonderous surprises I'd like to share.

First - we've had several areas with hostas growing around our house.  Most bloom every year, but one batch of them have never bloomed (in 10 years).  About 3 years ago, we had to transplant the non-blooming hostas due to an addition we put on our house.  Still - no blooming going on.  However...on my birthday this year, I look out the back window, lo and behold...they are blooming!!

Hostas

Second -after an afternoon of raining, the most gorgeous rainbow appears.  Not just one rainbow, but TWO!  Plus - it was a FULL rainbow.  The entire arch was laid out in front of us in wonderous glory!  Now, I suppose some of you are saying - yeah, so what.  However, I've never seen a full rainbow and I was in complete awe of it.  It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. (the picture doesn't even begin to capture it's beauty, or the 2nd rainbow - especially since it was already beginning to fade when I got my camera).

Rainbow

In addition, I had a great meal with my family at Red Lobster (one of my favorites!!).  Plus, some fun handmade cards that I'll share next week.

Thanks to everyone for a fun birthday celebration!

Now - on to the drawing winners...

VIDEO: Secret Door Technique meets Cottage Garden

What do you get when you mix the Secret Door Technique with Stampin' Up!'s Cottage Garden stamp set...a Secret Garden!

My Technique Club members were simply amazed with this project.  I kept hearing about the Secret Door technique and wanted to learn about it.  After several searches, I came across it here.

Dawns Stamping Tips - Secret Door Technique
1.  Start with 5" x 8" piece of cardstock
2.  Score at 2", 4", 6"
3.  Fold in half at the 4" score mark
4.  While folded, cut from fold line to the next score mark at 1-1/4", 2-1/2" & 3-3/4"
5.  Open and "weave" 1-15/16" x 5" strips of Designer Series Paper into the center cuts
6.  Fold sides/ends of the card over, into the center (like a gate-fold card)
7.  Decorate
8.  To open secret door...with card open, "lift" the center of the card with your thumbs (holding onto a piece of the cardstock "slits") and pull away from each other to reveal the secret door.  Sorry, it kind of hard to describe - watch video for demonstration.

Dawn's August 13th Birthday Celebration: Concord Crush meets Punch Potpourri

Well today's the day...Dawn's Friday the 13th Birthday Celebration - TODAY's my BIRTHDAY!  And here's my gift to you!!!

This week I'm sharing some of my favorite things from the 2010-2011 Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog.

Dawns Favorites:
Punch Potpourri Stamp Set (Level One Hostess Set)
Occasional Quotes Stamp Set (Level Three Hostess Set)
Rhinestone Jewels (#119246)
Elegant Lines Textured Impressions Embossing Folder (#119277)
Butterfly Punch (#119848)

Dawns Card:
...is inspired by my friend and downline Laurie Zoellmer.  I received her butterfly card as a swap at convention and instantly fell in love with the way she did the Butterfly punch art.   I did add my own twists, by using my new favorite color...Concord Crush and by adding Rhinestone Jewels for the butterfly body.

Elegant-Lines-Butterfly

The Butterfly is actually 3 layers.  The bottom two layers are Concord Crush and Whisper White.  The top layer is stamped with Concord Crush ink with the Butterfly image from Punch Potpourri (a Hostess level one stamp set).  I love the dimensional result the 3 layers give it!  Like it's ready to fly off!!

Elegant-Lines-Butterfly-cu

Dawns Stamping Tips - using Rhinestone Jewels
There are so many great things about the Rhinestone Jewels!  First off - you get 150 pieces!  But you actually get more than that, because there are 3 rows of 21 "connected" rhinestones too!  You can use them connected to create borders OR you can snip them into the sizes you want. Which makes your jewels last even longer!!

On this card - I snipped the connected rhinestones into two's and used them for the body of the butterfly!  Love the look!!!

Dawns Card:
...has LOTS of my favorites!  It was also inspired by my brand new Stampin' Up! Color Coach...LOVE IT!! I was looking for color inspiration for Concord Crush and thought..."that's right, I have a new Color Coach.  I wonder what color combo it suggests?"  Lookie here!

Color-Coach

Well - it turns out that I really like it...Concord Crush, Pear Pizzazz & Peach Parfait!  Isn't it a beautiful color combo?

stampin up, dostamping, dawn olchefske, demonstrator, messages for mom

Dawns Stamping Tips - adhering Rhinestone Jewels
For ease in adhering the Rhinestone Jewels, either use the point of your scissors or paper piercer to lift the Rhinestone from the backing (be sure to get the ahesive "dot" too).  Keeping it on whatever tool you use - place in onto your project.  Press a finger to the Rhinestone Jewel, then slide the scissors or paper piercer out from under the jewel.  Viola - perfect placement every time!

Look how perfect the rhinestone fits in the center of the flower from the Messages from Mom stamp set.
